Session 9 – Architecture Geeks
Welcome back to ideacity Day 3. Today is our final day but it is sure to be a big one. We started off our session today with Victor Quijada and the Rubber Band Dance Group. He told us about his experiences and all of the influences he has had. His unique styling of dance blends ballet and breakdancing and is hugely beautiful.
Our first speaker of the day Juliet Jiang, spoke to the audience about sustainable buildings and building them quickly. Known for building a 30 story hotel in a only 15 days. These buildings are sustainable, will survive an earthquake, and have been equipped with fresh air to help prevent sickness. The ‘Sky City’ as Juliet’s company BROAD has entitled it, includes everything from schools to work to an organic garden. Hopefully these buildings will becoming to a city near you very soon.
To follow up our exciting first presenter was Esteban Suarez from BNKR to speak about his various projects including churches, dog houses, pavilions, and even a city. Concerned about sustainability Esteban and his team attempt to use recycled goods for their buildings, and have even built a pavilion with soda cases. He presented to the audience the concept of an earthscraper opposed to a skyscraper in Mexico City. The earthscraper includes a glass floor so those above can observe, subway access, a museum, office spaces, and shopping.
Our next speaker Michael Green proposed to build tall buildings out of wood. Inspired by the red wood forests in British Columbia, Canada; His goal is to build a 30 story building completely out of wood. Michael presented to the audience that by building with wood, we can create a more sustainable building and reduce our carbon footprint.
Our final speaker of the session was Francis Gendron who spoke to us about sustainable buildings. The first graduate of the Earthship Academy of Michael Reynolds in Taos, New Mexico; Francis has gone on to teach others how to build sustainable buildings and teaching different solutions to help with sustainability.
That concluded our first session of the 3rd day. Up next is Geek Ages & Stages which is sure to delight.
