Changing Afghan History

04/10/2024

It’s hard to imagine that, in an era of enlightenment such as ours, the roles and freedoms of women are being challenged worldwide. In Afghanistan, the situation is extreme, with a recent ban on women baring their faces and speaking in public places. Back in 2002, Afghan-Canadian journalist and filmmaker Nelofer Pazira-Fisk came to ideacity to warn against inaction and to talk about how our views on history can either imprison us or set us free. She talked about her past life in Afghanistan – the violence, the war and the fact that the people of Afghanistan did live in peace at one point. Look for Nelofer in the NFB documentary In the Room, a film featuring five Afghan women who have made an impact on the world through their work and lives.
