Session 10 – Geek Ages & Stages
We started off this session on Geek Ages and Stages with a memorial to Dr. Henry Morgentaler with his previous talk at ideacity. Nothing short of amazing, Dr. Morgentaler survived the holocaust and went on to be a trailblazer for legal abortions.
Our first live speaker for this session was Jack Andraka who at 15 years old developed a 3 cent paper test for pancreatic, lung, and ovarian cancers. The test that only takes 5 minutes currently has a 100% success rate. Jack, went on to explain how he came to his innovation and the impediments that he faced. Jack reminded the audience that all you need is an idea and passion.
Following up Jack Andraka was writer/actor Rick Miller to explain his newest project BOOM. This project which will premier in Calgary 2014 captures key moments of the babyboom. Rick kept the audience enthralled with his singing, acting, and great videos.
Artist Jeremy Sutton who painted ideacity’s founder Moses Znaimer 18 years ago took the stage to explain his 3D drawing tablet that he is able to use by simply doing gestures. After explaining how the whole tablet works, re-painted Moses live in front of the crowd.
That wraps up the 10th session on a high note. Now, time for some lunch and then onto our Greek Pot Pourri session at 3pm.
