Session 8 – Space
To infinity and beyond! Our final session of day 2 concentrated on space. Our first speaker Scott Larson spoke to us about how we are able to have our photo taken by the international space station and keeping with a tech theme discussed open source software.
Up next was Bob Richards, to discuss the Moon Express, making space travel to the moon possible. Although this seems like something out of a sci-fi film, space is not empty and is full of resources that are going to be changing the way we live on earth.
23 year old Ian Webster followed up to speak to us about asteroids. Founder of Asterank, Ian spoke to use about tools for asteroid discovery, and free-open scientific data and software in space. You should also keep your eyes open because if you find an asteroid you get to name it!
Our final speaker of the session Mark Showalter taught the audience about the rings of saturn, pluto, and the various moons in the solar system. He dug into how they have gone about naming the various moons in the solar system and the most recent use of social media that has been used in naming the moons. Just a reminder: on July 19th remember to go outside and wave at Saturn.
Closing out the evening, Jaffa Road had the audience up on their feet dancing and closing out the final session of the day. See you at all tomorrow and remember to keep watching the skies.
