Sook-Yin Lee

Sook Yin Lee

A gifted musician, actor, filmmaker, television host and producer, Lee first garnered national attention as the lead singer of the influential Vancouver alternative band Bob’s Your Uncle. She subsequently released several solo albums, performed in a wide range of theatre, film and television projects, and was a VJ for MuchMusic from 1995 to 2003. Lee recently held a feature role in the film version of the stage musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch and was the romantic lead in the 2002 film The Art of Woo.

With her inquiring mind, kaleidoscopic range of talents and her comfort with all aspects of the media, Lee is uniquely suited for her current position, that of host of CBC Radio’s ‘hectic and eclectic’ weekly program,DNTO (Definitely Not The Opera).

In early 2004, she became the centre of controversy when the CBC threatened to fire her for taking a role in John Cameron Mitchell’s sexually explicit film Short Bus. Management eventually relented, after listeners complained (and perhaps also because of the famous voices protesting on Lee’s behalf, which included Yoko Ono, Gus Van Sant, Francis Ford Coppola and Julianne Moore).
