Clayton Ruby

Clayton Ruby

He’s represented a 16-year old student who was expelled, arrested and jailed for writing a fictional story about an outcast who plotted to blow up his school, and he was a vocal opponent of the security measures put in place at last spring’s Summit of the Americas in Quebec City (calling it the “greatest humiliation of Canadian democracy”). Last fall, he lead the chorus of protest against the impact of Bill C-36 (the federal government’s Anti-Terrorism Act) on the every day freedoms of Canadians, and recently his 14-year old fight with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service to view his personal security file was argued in front of the Supreme Court of Canada.

Clayton Ruby is a high profile, civil liberties lawyer and a partner in the Toronto firm Ruby & Edwardh. A graduate of U of T’s law school, Ruby was called to the bar in 1969.
He continued his studies at the University of California (Berkeley), earning his Master of Laws degree in 1973. Ruby specializes in criminal, constitutional and administrative law. Outside of the courtroom, he is a director for PEN Canada and for the Sierra Legal Defence Fund.
